Officer of the Month

Officer of the Month

The Danville Police Department implemented an Officer of the Month program in 2018. Each month, Chief Scott Booth asks supervisors assigned to the Operations Division to select an officer that has gone “above and beyond” in the performance of his or her duties and write up a brief synopsis detailing those efforts. The members of the command staff then meet, review the submissions, and make a selection. The same process is also followed for the Services Division, and an officer assigned to a unit other than Operations is selected as well.

For the month of July, I would like to congratulate the following officers for their selection as the Officers of the Month:

Officer, E. D. Goff II

In July of 2019, Officer E.D. Goff III conducted a traffic stop in the 2800block of West Main Street and detected the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.  Officer Goff identified that the passenger had warrants on file, so he detained him.  Goff located a handgun on the passenger’s person and also discovered approximately 5 grams of marijuana that the passenger had concealed in his groin area.  He was taken into custody and subsequently charged with the marijuana possession, possession of a firearm-convicted felon, and possession of a stolen firearm, as it had been reported stolen out of another Virginia jurisdiction.

Officer, I. J. Smith

In July of 2019, Officer I. J. Smith he conducted a traffic stop on West Main Street for illegal window tint. The driver of the vehicle had no driver’s license and did not speak English. Officer Smith called for an officer to interpret so he could communicate with the driver, which eventually lead to the arrest of the diver who had a firearm.  Also seized from the vehicle was over $7,000.00 and multiple items that are consistent with the transportation of illegal narcotics.  Officer Smith's determination and utilizing of all his resources gave him the capability to conduct a high-quality traffic stop.

Please join me in congratulating our officers of the month for July 2019!

Scott C. Booth
